Fugo Desserts

Fugo Desserts was doing some kind of promotion today and they were selling $1 scoops of ice cream!

Cookie Monster ice cream
It's a blue vanilla ice cream with cookie pieces. I tried it at Coachella last year and didn't really see the appeal (other than for Instagram pictures). I didn't really enjoy this version either since I'm not a huge fan of vanilla ice cream.

Earl Grey Ice Cream
This ice cream was really good! My friend made a much better choice with her tea flavoured ice cream which was fragrant and smooth in texture. Yummy!

Xtreme Taste

June 23, 2017
After eating at Eat A Pita, I wanted to go back to Xtreme Taste to do a bit of a comparison. So I took my coworker here for the $5 salad box.
Clearly I'm a creature of habit because without consulting my blog, I got the exact same thing as I got two years ago. Chicken breast with fattoush, potato and macaroni salad. Still as good as it was before - I think they have more flavourful and tasty salads than next door.

May 1, 2015
Chicken with hot sauce, tahini, fattoush salad, macaroni salad and chickpea salad $5
Delicious and great value for money as usual! A pretty well balanced meal with the salads and the meat and it's really tasty.

July 9, 2014
I was looking for lunch options near the Yonge and Bloor area, when I found Xtreme Taste on Yelp!
The reviews all said that the food was super cheap and healthy, so I knew I had to give it a try.

It's a really small place: pure take-out food and yet so crazy busy! It was only when I got inside that I saw the two ladies working the counter with the food. I would totally wait in line again for the $5 meals!
Chicken with 3 salads: chickpea, macaroni and potato $5
It's not a huge amount of food, but it's a pretty cheap option especially near the Yorkville area!
It's pretty healthy too since you can choose your options.
I got the chickpea, macaroni and potato salads because everyone else in front of me was getting them.
I really liked the chickpea and macaroni salad - very tasty, but the potato salad felt a little bland to me (until I ate like 4 huge coriander leaves).
The chicken was pretty hearty and it was so much better with tahini and hot sauce! It's like the flavours just popped out more.

Overall: A super cheap and healthy lunch option in Yorkville, no wonder there's always a line up!

Sorento Restaurant

June 20, 2017
We really liked their wood oven pizzas, so we came back for Sorento's $12 pizza night on Tuesdays.
Sorentos Special Steak, Calabrese and Roma pizzas
The special steak is a favourite with sirloin, caramelized onions, mushrooms and hot peppers on a crispy crust. The Calabrese had chicken, mushrooms, roasted red peppers and garlic and cheese which was good, but not as good as the steak pizza. The Roma pizza with shrimp, scallops, escargot and roasted red peppers was interesting, but I didn't taste or see all the seafood in my pizza.
It's still a great deal for $12 and I'm sure I'll be back again!

Sorentos Special Steak Pizza
I was a little skeptical about the special steak since it had hot peppers on it. I liked that it had sirloin,  caramelized onions and mushrooms, but hot peppers on pizza was foreign to me. Once I tried it, I was really pleasantly surprised by how good hot pepper on pizza could be! I really liked this pizza - it had the perfect crispy crust from the wood oven and there was a lot of melted cheese, tasty seasoned steak, sweet onions and earthy mushrooms on it. This was REALLY GOOD.

Spaghetti Sorento's Way
A lot more chicken, spinach, onions and bacon than last year.
The pasta dish was okay; I think the flavours from the spinach, onions and bacon were a lot more prominent this time.

Penne California
Chicken breast, peppers, sun-dried tomato in a pesto tomato sauce.
This dish didn't quite hit the mark either - the sauce was a tad too watery and there just didn't seem to be a pronounced flavour tying the dish together.

Fettuccine Polo Pesto
The dish came with diced chicken, peppers and mushrooms and an olive oil pesto sauce. It tasted pretty oily and the flavours were particularly strong. I think they do their pizzas better than the pastas.

Nov 1, 2016
I had a craving for Italian and originally I was planning on going to Frankie Tomatto's for AYCE Italian. However, by the time my friend got off work, I wasn't that hungry, so we went to Sorento near Don Mills and Eglinton instead.
Gnocchi Russa with rose sauce, mushrooms, spinach and sun dried tomatoes
Yum! Gnocchi - the pasta was a nice al dente, but we weren't huge fans of the sauce.

Spaghetti Sorento's Way with chicken breast, onion, bacon and spinach in a pesto white wine cream sauce
A decent portion size and pretty tasty.

Overall: Service was great and the food was pretty reasonably priced and tasty. It's not the best Italian, but it'll definitely do when I have an Italian craving.

Darband Restaurant

June 6, 2017

Koobideh and chicken platter and a koobideh platter
The chicken was a little over-cooked and not really flavourful by itself. I preferred the koobideh. The koobideh meat was really tender and it was pretty tasty. However, I like the slightly more grilled version from North. The platters at Darband were cheaper than North Express' platters and they did include a lot of basmati rice, a charred tomato and a side salad.

October 30, 2016
I didn't even realize that there was a 24/7 Persian restaurant open in the plaza by Don Mills and York Mills until I searched nearby Persian restaurants (because I was craving koobideh and usually I go to North Express at Yonge and Steeles).

Koobideh Take-out
Koobideh was really flavourful and tender. The juices from the meat soaked into the basmati rice and made it so good! I'd definitely come back for the Koobideh (but I love the sandwiches at North Express more).

Hunter's Pizza & Souvlaki House

I felt like I found a hidden gem in Scarborough - it's one of the most multicultural plazas I've seen in a while (excluding food courts). There's a Jamaican place, Vietnamese place, Greek place, Taiwanese place, Mexican place and Cantonese restaurant in this tiny strip mall

Garlic Bread and Greek Salad (comes with the steak)
The salad was really good with lots of feta and Greek dressing on the lettuce. The garlic bread had cheese on top which is nice.

12 oz Sirloin steak with mushrooms, rice and potatoes $19.95
We ordered the steak medium and it came medium well, but it was still okay. There were a lot of mushrooms, rice and potatoes. I really liked their Greek rice and potatoes since they were savoury and flavoursome.

Lunch portion of the Chicken Souvlaki $9.95
The chicken was perfectly cooked - super succulent and appetizing. The tzatziki was thick and flavourful. I also got a smaller portion of the rice and salad which was more than enough food.

Baklava
The baklava was not too sweet and it had a nice crispy top crust, but I found that it had too much honey which made it a little too soggy in my opinion.

Overall: Great meal at Hunter's Pizza & Souvlaki House and the food is really reasonably priced. It's good value-for-money here.
