Fring's

A friend from out of town was in Toronto for a bit and wanted to try out Fring's (so here we are!)
Ceviche
Really yummy and a lot of bright and vibrant flavours.
Mushroom toast
Yummy (but not easily divisible between 5 people)
So pretty!

Sweet and sour meatballs
I wasn't really a fan of this - the sweet and sour flavours made it a little too tangy.

Fried Chicken

Beef Short rib
Super tender and melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness! We basically tried to scrape every last bit of this out of the bowl.

Frankfurt Airport Lounge - Frankfurt, Germany

We had dinner at the Frankfurt Airport Lounge since we had time before our flight:
20160822_170509
Butter chicken, Bombay Chicken, stuffed peppers, pasta salad, chicken wrap, saffron rice and more
It was all pretty good, so I went back for more:

Pasta salad, butter chicken, chili, Bombay chicken, chicken wrap (part 2)

Noodle soup with vermicelli and a chocolate mousse.

Frankfurt, Germany

August 15, 2016

We arrived in Frankfurt just in time for the Apple wine Festival!

They cook sausages over an open fire and on a rotating tray!
Sausage
Apfelwein spitz
A fantastic alcholic summer-y drink!

Flammkuchen (a German/French pizza made with fresh cheese or creme fraiche)
The flammkuchen was really yummy with a nice thin and crispy crust and cheese, ham and peppers on top.

Frankfurter Green Sauce with schnitzel, eggs and potatoes
A Frankfurt specialty! The green sauce dish is a summer dish and has lots of herbs in it. It was pretty good and there was enough sauce for the schnitzel, eggs and potatoes. Definitely worth a try!

For dinner, we went to a German restaurant that the hotel staff told us about:

Pork Knuckle
This was really disappointing compared to the pork knuckle I had in Berlin 5 years ago.
There was barely any sauce and the meat was mostly dry. The dish also seemed like they were trying to give us a ton of sauerkraut and potatoes to compensate for the smaller pork knuckle portion.

Breakfast at the Hotel

They had the cutest tea pots and tea bags!
Lots of options for breakfast including smoked salmon, pastries, eggs, tomatoes (not sure I understand the tomatoes with cheese), pancakes, potato wedges and more!

Outside of Frankfurt, on our way to Prague, we stopped at a gas station for lunch and a bathroom break:

Schnitzel and vegetables
You gotta love the schnitzel in Germany - the portions are HUGE and it was pretty tasty (the vegetables were good too).

August 21, 2016
Coming back from the Black Forest, we stopped by the train station to drop off some people and pick up dinner. So many options (and only 1/2 hour to grab food).

More Schnitzel and Scalloped potatoes
After eating so much schnitzel throughout the trip, I feel like I needed one last schnitzel to properly end my Eastern Europe experience. The potatoes were fantastic (I could eat a ton of those potatoes).
Chinese food
My family got sick of schnitzel.

Breakfast at the same hotel
No smoked salmon, but there was smoked trout, apricots and plums - still as delicious as the first day!

Since we had almost an entire day in Frankfurt before our flight in the late afternoon, we decided to go on a search for Baumkuchen (and found it in a Galleria rather than a bakery). I also found out about the Frankfurter Kranz, a Frankfurt specialty cake.

Slice of the Frankfurter Kranz
Surprisingly dense sponge cake with layers of buttercream and nuts along the side.
It was good, but it wasn't anything exceptional.

Cafe & Brauhaus Zur Mühle - Lake Titisee, Germany

It was a gorgeous day at Lake Titisee and it was so pretty!

Lunch menu
Rösti with beef, mushroom and cheese
Rösti is a Swiss potato pancake/fritter and it paired really well with the cheesy mushroom and beef mix.

Pork knuckle (Schweinshaxe)
This pork knuckle was much better than the one we had in Frankfurt. It wasn't dry and it was pretty meaty and tasty (especially with the gravy).

Black Forest Cake
Something I learned from eating authentic Black Forest Cake in the Black Forest region of Germany: This cake has alcohol in it! It's actually made with kirsch (a sour-cherry brandy) and it was heavily flavoured with it. The cake was moist and fluffy, but I wasn't a big fan of the brandy flavour.

Bachmann - Lucerne, Switzerland

Strange, but it's been almost exactly 5 years since I was last in Lucerne and surprisingly, things haven't changed that much (although my favourite Luzern Pasterli restaurant was gone and I couldn't find the Laderach chocolate shop).
One thing was the same: Bachmann
And they now have a panini counter!

They also have a buzzer system for when they're done making your panini!
Ham and Cheese Baguette
Smoked Beef Panini
Curry Chicken Panini
All the sandwiches were okay, but I definitely liked the curry chicken panini the most - it had the most flavour.

Smoked beef panini and salad
Apricot Tarte
Huge piece of pie and it was okay - not really exceptional though.
I feel like Bachmann used to be better

Zurich, Switzerland

We stayed the night in Zurich and this was my breakfast:
Canned peaches, oranges, kiwi, sausage, macaroni salad and meatballs with orange juice
Definitely an interesting mix for breakfast (but who can resist meatballs and macaroni salad even if it's early in the morning?)

Mount Titlis, Switzerland

Glacier Walking at Mount Titlis!
Pretty cool to be up 10,000 feet (and I didn't have to hike it either!).
Mixed Chocolate Bark
So I prepared myself for what might be the best chocolate ever - and it was pretty good!
I'm not sure if the chocolate was just that good (I loved the strawberry white chocolate bark with the chunks of strawberry and the bark with pecans and almonds) or if it tasted better because I was almost 10,000 feet up. Either way - the purchase was totally worth it.
