Sun Tea

Exploring another Ubereats BOGO milk tea place:
Brulee Milk Tea $6.77 (for two)
I got this milk tea with 0% sugar and no option to choose my ice level (so it was regular ice and probably 30% of the cup was ice). The brulee portion of the drink was not as evident in the cold drink and I actually found the cold version of the drink rather bland at first.
So, I ended up straining all the ice out and reheating it at home to drink it. Once I did that, the milk tea tasted a lot better and was lightly sweetened by the creme brulee cream/foam that melted into the milk tea and made it smoother. The tapioca were pretty good too, not too firm and not super mushy with a nice chewy texture and consistency. The colour was also lighter since they were made of brown sugar.

Longo's

Dec 18, 2020 @ 7355 Bayview

I got a coupon for a free Umo donut pack online. It took me a few tries at a few Longo's locations before I found it:
Umo Japanese Style Steam Baked Donuts White Peach flavour $2.99
Actually pretty good, but very sweet even though it didn't have any icing. Since it was pre-packaged, it had a 2023 expiry date (which makes me wonder about the preservatives). It was a bit crumbly, but it had a decent fluff overall to the donut.

Longo's has a sale this week on their zeppolini with 6 for $7.98, so I got an assortment:
Clockwise from top left: strawberry, lemon, pistachio, nutella, hazelnut, strawberry
The zeppolini pastry which is the deep fried dough layer was prety fluffy in general and each of the desserts had a lot of cream or custard inside.
Strawberry: good strawberry jam inside to balance out the custard in the zeppolini pastry.
Lemon: excellent lemon curd cream, it wasn't too tart or sour and was sweet like meyer lemons.
Pistachio: more sugar than pistachio flavour, but there were some nuts inside.
Hazelnut: a strange hazelnut taste and okay overall
Nutella: Actually not nutella flavoured and more chocolate flavoured but it was a hot chocolate and powdery chocolate kind of flavour instead - would skip this one.

Canneloni $5.99 for 6 pieces
Pretty good deal - Longo's has a rotating hot table, so you never really know what you're going to get - this was probably one of the better deals I've seen since I like Longo's tomato sauce that has a strong tomato flavour but isn't too tangy or overpowering and their pasta dishes are also generally pretty good. There was a lot of spinach and cheese stuffed into the canneloni which was pretty good - would be even better if it was meat!

Spinach, walnut, apple salad

Family size pack of salad
Huge portion of salad, but the dressing wasn't that great.

Roasted Turkey with stuffing
Pretty good roasted turkey and there was a lot of veggies also packed into the container.

Beef Roast with roasted potatoes and steamed vegetables $10.99
Really tender beef that was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the potatoes were really yummy with a crisp outside shell. This roast isn't always available at Longo's, so definitely grab it when you get a chance! It's good value for money for $10.99 considering it's already cooked for you and ready to serve.

It's key lime pie season again!

Unfortunately, this Longo's key lime pie slice was terrible - the super sweet whipped marshmallow on top was completely separated from the key lime curd. The pie crust was super crumbly and didn't even hold properly and the key lime curd was way too tart and had a grainy texture like apple sauce. I almost wonder if they cut up their really old key lime pies (that are almost expired) and tried to sell it this way. The box said the best before date was much later, but this pie slice was awful (won't be buying this again).

It's back! Lobster rolls are in season again!
Longo's has changed up their buns from last year - they had buttery brioche buns and baguettes. The brioche buns had 3 fluffy buns (one was already in my stomach before I remembered to take the picture) and the baguette is below. I would definitely prefer the baguette over the sweet brioche bun because the buttery brioche didn't work as well with the saltier lobster filling and it also made it taste a little fishier.

Cheese and Spinach Manicotti $5.99 and Lobster Roll in a baguette $6.99
The lobster roll baguette had lots of lobster mixture and a nice crispy baguette. It paired better, but it wasn't as shareable. The manicotti had a lot of cheese and not as much spinach flavour, but the tomato sauce was good and it worked well.

Longo's sometimes pre-packs some of their hot table items together to sell them in portioned out containers
Salmon, grilled vegetables and shell pasta stuffed with cheese $10.99
The salmon was overcooked since it was probably sitting at the hot table for most of the day, so it became very firm. However, it had good flavour with the herbs and it was a huge portion.  Longo's does really good grilled vegetables, they're always seasoned really well and they have a slight char on the outside - the mix also always changes, but in this case there were zucchini, mushrooms and peppers.  The stuffed pasta shells with cheese were okay with a tart tasty tomato sauce tying the soft pasta with the savoury cheese.

Veal $10
Huge portion and really tasty with lots of herbs and spices to make the meat stand out.

Lasagna $5.99
Such a good deal! There's only about 3 layers (as opposed to lasagnas with more layers), but the pasta was soft and tasty with a good mix of cheese, meat and sauce. I also really liked that they put in bechamel sauce to make it taste creamier.

Key Lime Cheesecake slice
Longo's makes their own pistachio and key lime cheesecakes now (two of my favourite flavours). I bought a slice to see how the key lime cheesecake would taste and it had a nice key lime flavour. The actual cheesecake felt a little heavy though and the crust was a little sticky (as opposed to crumbly).

Meatball sandwich with three toppings (cheese, roasted peppers and mushrooms)
The meatball sandwich was pretty good! They gave me a lot of peppers and they melted the cheese nicely in my sandwich. Delish!

Lobster Roll $6.99
It's lobster season!!! I was surprised to see how cheap their lobster rolls were, considering lobster rolls can go for up to $20 in Toronto. It was pretty tasty

Mini Lobster Rolls $6.99
Smaller snack size portions

Chungchun Rice Dog

Dec 18, 2020 @ 11 Byng Ave.

I've been meaning to try the Korean Corn Dogs for a while and when I saw it was on Ritual with a pickup option at the original & first Canadian location at Yonge and Finch (on Byng), I pre-ordered one in advance. Sadly, there was still a long line-up, but I was able to skip the line in front of the store and pick up quickly.
Gamsang Hot Dog with Crispy Potato $4.99
It looks like a work of art with all those cubes of potato. I didn't get the feeling that there was a lot of corn dough and the hot dog was okay. I didn't get to chose my sauces, but they put sweet chili, mayo and ketchup on the corn dog - which was pretty good actually.

Sansotei Ramen

Dec 18, 2020 @ 13 Byng Ave

There was a promotion on Ubereats that if you spend $30 or more, you can get a free Tonkotsu Plus Ramen with black truffle oil. It works out to about 3 ramens for the price of 2 - such a good deal!

Left to Right: Shoyu, Tonkotsu Plus and Tomato Ramen
Shoyu: Good thin noodle ramen with nice soy sauce broth and lots of bamboo shoots, chashu, ramen egg and green onion. Not the favourite though - that was another ramen.
Tonkotsu Plus: Super strong black truffle oil flavour, pretty good but the truffle oil overpowered the rich tonkotsu base. It also had chashu, black fungus, egg, onions and black garlic oil.
Tomato: I can't believe it came with a whole hokkaido scallop (including the outside parts that you usually don't see or get). It was huge, sweet and delicious! The tomato broth was also rich, almost like a bisque which gave the whole ramen a lot of flavour and with more tomatos and shittake mushrooms - it was even stronger in flavour.

October 22, 2012 @ 179 Dundas St W
The new ramen place on the block with Sansotei opening up on Dundas Street West between University and Bay (in direct competition with Kenzo two blocks east on Dundas) and it's been getting rave reviews.

Before the 12pm Lunch rush                               12pm Lunch rush

The four 6-seater tables means that it's a bit of a tetris game for the wait staff: how many combinations of people can I make to maximize the seating space? (It's like I'm in Grade 12 Data Management all over again).
Tonkotsu ramen $9.25
Pork Bone broth with black fungus, egg, chashu and green onions
Wow - this broth is AMAZING! Creamy, rich and flavourful - it wasn't too salty and it was a great way to tie all the ingredients together. The chashu was a nice balance of fat and meat and yummy on its own. It was such a great bowl of ramen that I finished it all:

Overall: I'll definitely be back! It's really perfect for a quick 1/2 hour lunch - quick service, decent price and delicious food: Sansotei's ramen is the perfect way to warm you up on a chilly day - hearty and yummy.

Gyu Kaku Japanese BBQ

Dec 17, 2020
We stumbled upon Gyu Kaku when exploring the Ubereats BOGO deals and everything seemed like a really good deal!
Clockwise from top left: Umakara Beef Bowl $14.50 (x2), Steamed Chili Dumplings $8.45 (x2), Japanese Fried Chicken Karaage $8.95 (x2), Gyu Kaku salad (came with the bowls), Chicken Karaage Bowl $14.50 (x2)
Umakara beef: the beef was surprisingly sweet and the rice bowl had a delicious sweet onion sauce as well - a different way of eating beef as I haven't had a lot of sweet beef.
Chili Dumplings: the dumplings were pretty good and the sweet chili oil was not too spicy and really tasty which made it the perfect complement to the simple dumplings. I think this might be some of the best chili oil I've ever had.
Chicken Karaage: The fried chicken wasn't that crispy (maybe due to the late pick-up) and there was quite a bit of breaded skin. The spicy mayo was really good though.
Chicken Karaage Bowl: Pretty good, but I wish there was more spicy mayo to go around with the cabbage and rice since there was so much of those two in the bowl.
The Gyu Kaku salad was pretty good too and came with half a hard boiled egg and lots of fresh vegetables like cucumber, spinach, mixed greens, daikon, cabbage, cherry tomatoes, tomatoes - the dressing was quite heavy though.

Freshii

Dec 15, 2020 @ Yonge & Sheppard
Freshii's Ubereats BOGO promotion didn't quite register on my radar, since I'm not a huge salad person. Turns out, it looks like they're expanding into bowls and noodle soups and they're BOGO:
Spicy Lemongrass Soup $9.59 (x2), Teriyaki Twist Bowl $10.19 (x2) and Coconut Chia Pudding $5.99 (x2)

No protein in either bowl or soup
The teriyaki bowl had a really sweet sauce, but it didn't have the strong savoury flavour of teriyaki. The brown rice and veggies were good - my favourite part was definitely the crunchy bits. It did seem like it was lacking some kind of distinct profile flavour though (or maybe I was missing the protein).
The spicy lemongrass soup wasn't that spicy, but it needed more salt to really bring the flavours out - the chicken broth and noodles were good otherwise.

Coconut Chia Pudding
Chia seeds are gelatinous seeds or seeds with an outer jelly-like gluey layer, which makes their texture pretty interesting with the jelly outside layer and cracking seed inside. The pudding was okay with more coconut flavour from the shredded coconut than the sweet strawberries or crunchy apple mango.

January 22, 2016 @ 861 York Mills
I've passed by quite a few Freshii's downtown, but I've never actually tried one.  I was feeling a little sick and I didn't want to eat anything heavy for dinner, so I grabbed a salad.

Mediterranean Salad
Quinoa, greens, feta cheese, walnuts, almonds, red pepper sauce
Pretty good! Probably not worth the $10 I paid for it though - these salads are pricey!
